22nd Hesse Days in Sils

Thu, 16.06.2022 - Sun, 19.06.2022
The four-day event is aimed both at readers of H. Hesse and at all culture lovers who would like to get to know Hermann Hesse.

Programme 2022: Hermann Hesse´s "Siddhartha
Between Asian Spirituality and European Psychoanalysis

One hundred years ago, in October 1922, Hermann Hesse´s Indian legend "Siddhartha" was published for the first time, reaching a circulation of 150 thousand copies during his lifetime. While the contemporary response to the book was rather modest and, according to Hesse´s impression, of "respectful embarrassment", it experienced an unparalleled worldwide reception after his death, starting in the USA in the course of the Vietnam War. It has since been translated into almost 50 languages. One of the initiators of the translation published in New York in 1951 was the writer Henry Miller, who wrote: "Nothing since reading the ´Tao Te King´ has meant so much to me. A short book, a simple book, profound with a smile that rises above the bustle, transcends the world, and just by doing so finds it again. A book whose depth is hidden in the artfully simple language, in a clarity that probably upsets the mental torpor of those literary routinists who always know so well what is good and what is bad literature. To create a Buddha that surpasses the generally accepted Buddha is an unheard-of act, especially for a German."

In recent years, the Sils Hesse Days have developed into a highly regarded forum that facilitates dialogue between interested readers, well-known authors, representatives of literary studies, actors and musicians.
